Finding the perfect moisturizer when you have combination skin is not always an easy task. Some are too rich or way too watery, other times the ingredient list is shady and makes our face breakout.
I also have combination skin, so I know the hassle it can be. And to help you know whether or not a product works on combination skin types and if it’s worth hitting “place your order” I’m starting this series of skincare product reviews.
Today’s review is about Supermello Hydrating Gel Moisturizer a vegan moisturizer from the eco-friendly brand Kinship. Keep reading to know all about Supermello and if it is good for combination skin!

- Knowing I’m using a product without harsh chemicals and being able to understand its ingredient list
- “30-day feel good guarantee”. *
Cons:
- the scent, I would love a scent-free version but for me, it’s not a deal-breaker since it’s not a fragrance
- Not knowing the concentration of Hyaluronic Acid in it
* Kinship’s website offers a “30-day feel good guarantee” that guarantees your money back within 30 days if you do not fall in love with it (not available for final sale items).

Kinship Supermello’s main ingredients
Earlier I listed the main ingredients in Supermello Gel Cream now let’s break down how do they work on your skin.
Hyaluronic Acid: “is a humectant — a substance that retains moisture — and it is capable of binding over one thousand times its weight in water” & “For individuals with dry skin, or for those who crave a more dewy, moisturized feel to their skin during the cooler months, serum or moisturizer containing HA can be a great choice. But keep in mind that topical HA will provide hydration on a surface level, not deep within the skin.”
Explain Kristina Liu, MD, MHS, and Janelle Nassim, MD, on Harvard Health Publishing
Marshmallow Root: Also known as Althaea Officinalis Root Extract, is a perennial herb that’s native to Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. It’s been used as a folk remedy for thousands of years to treat digestive, respiratory, and skin conditions.
This herb has many studies defending its “anti-inflammatory effect of marshmallow root may also help relieve skin irritation caused by furunculosis, eczema, and dermatitis” and “that the herb stimulates certain cells that have anti-inflammatory activity.” Wrote Emily Cronkleton on Healthline.
Coconut Water: “Coconut water may help nourish and moisturize dry skin when applied topically because it contains multiple sugars and amino acids.” Explains Dr. Marie Hayag, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of 5th Avenue Aesthetics in New York City, to Healthline.
Kinbiome: Kinship’s own plant-based pre-probiotic derived from the fermentation of lactobacillus, in the company’s words it’s like “Kombucha 4 your face”, and supports a strong natural skin barrier.
Another article was published in 2020 in the National Library Of Medicine and says that “Initial studies in animal models and human clinical trials show that these products can slow the intrinsic and extrinsic aging process. Sharma et al. explain that probiotics can restore acidic skin pH, alleviate oxidative stress, attenuate photoaging, improve skin barrier function, and enhance hair quality.
While the study doesn’t mention plant-based probiotics, it shows that studies are developing around this subject.
Another research paper published in September 2021 on MDPI.com says that little is known about the skin’s microbiome and to keep the usage of probiotics safe it should meet new criteria.
But who is Kinship?
Let’s talk about Kinship for a minute! Kinship is a new-ish skincare brand founded by industry experts, Alison Haljun and Christin Powell in 2019.
Kinship is different, their mission is to change the standards of the skincare products, taking care of the planet while making clean beauty more accessible.
And to achieve that their “products are made using potent superfoods and probiotics, botanical enzymes, and clinically-studied actives to support a healthy skin barrier”, explains the Linkedin page of the company.
Also, their packages are recycled, part of them are made from ocean plastic waste, and they keep it minimal. Kinship has cleaned already 6 Tons of ocean waste plastic (OWP) in Indonesia.
You can even find the locations where your product plastic came from by scanning the QR code on it. Way of making change!
How to use Supermello Gel Cream
Apply on a clean face with gentle movements until absorbed. Can be used AM and PM.
In my skincare routine, I’m using Supermello after my serums in the mornings and evenings. In the mornings before sunscreen and in the evenings it’s my routine last step. If you want to take a peek at the serums that are staples in my skincare routine you can see them here.
What does Supermello Gel Cream feel like?
The first thing I noticed after opening the jar was the vanilla marshmallows’ scent. It was a surprise, I don’t know why I expected it to be scent-free.
If you are not a big fan of scents or vanilla, I wouldn’t recommend it to you. I got used to it after the second day but would love a scent-free version of it.
While applying it on my face I noticed that a little goes a long way, unless you want to spread it over your neck and décolleté too, use it with a light hand.
Supermello’s texture is creamy but lightweight. It absorbs really fast leaving your skin with a healthy glow, but not greasy at all, not even on the T zone.
I used it after a shower, my skin always feels a little tight afterward, It relieved the tightness immediately, like other moisturizers, the difference was the refreshing feeling. My skin was feeling plumped and soft to the touch.
The jar comes full but it doesn’t come with a spatula, which makes sense for an eco-friendly brand, so if you don’t want to dip your finger in it get yourself a spatula beforehand.
Is Kinship Supermello good for combination skin?
If you made it here and still want to know if Supermello works for combination skin, the answer is YES!
After applying Supermello Gel Cream you can expect refreshed dewy and hydrated skin that is soft to the touch and not greasy or sticky.
Something that I wasn’t expecting was less visible pores after the first week of using it. I just got by surprise since I didn’t see any mention of that on the product details.
Since the ingredients focus on strengthening and balancing the skin’s natural barrier it makes sense that you may experience a decrease in oil production and even a decrease in pores size.
Skincare 101: a skin with a healthy barrier will not produce excessive oil and be less prone to redness and breakouts.

My thoughts on Kinship Supermello moisturizer

I really liked introducing Supermello Gel Cream into my skincare routine, besides the scent(I’m still not completely over it), I liked its texture and how it made my combination skin feel more hydrated and more balanced after the first week of use.
I also was impressed with Kinship’s work when I learned that in less than 3 years they had cleaned 6 tons of plastic from oceans.
Knowing that every time I order their products I’m supporting this work is something great.
I not only recommend Supermello to you and your combination skin, but I’ will be buying it again and again.
